The Cost of Moving to Australia

As you analyze the costs associated with moving overseas to Australia, NY International Shipping has found that there are two primary costs to review.

1. The relocation to Australia (plan fares, rates for shipping to Australia, etc.)

2. Costs of getting situated after moving to Australia (i.e. renting or buying a home or car, etc.)

Though costs may vary from one overseas moving company to the next, NY International Shipping suggests that you approach your comparison of international moving companies by using an apples-to-apples approach—compare the exact same shipping service and volume from company to company. This will give you an accurate idea of how each moving company compares to the others you are considering. Make sure that you also take reputations and referrals into account. A company may offer discounted rates, but may provide poor service which you can uncover by doing a little research and asking the international moving company for referrals.

International Shipping to Australia from New York

Shipping your goods during your relocation to Australia can vary in cost. If a customer has a small volume of items to ship, NY International Shipping can provide a rate for a small shipment utilizing our consolidation methods. Using this method, each shipment will be put on a separate palette and shrink-wrapped so that individual shipments will not get mixed up even though they are consolidated into one shipping container. For each consolidated shipment, NY International Shipping prints labels that detail each customer’s shipment number and information. If customers have larger shipments, NY International Shipping can provide an exclusive 20ft or 40ft container.

When comparing international moving companies, check the following things:

· Credentials – Make sure that the overseas moving company you choose is licensed as an NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) by the Federal Maritime Commission or FMC. Make sure that all prospective companies are also licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as well as possess appropriately licensed and bonded warehouses.

· Review Company Reputation – Review each company’s reputation and quality of service from several angles by checking the professionalism of the company’s website, asking for referrals, checking third-party review sites, etc.

· Apples-to-Apples Comparison – Compare the exact same shipping service using the same shipping volume and dates for each company.

Getting Through Customs in Australia

Upon entering the country, Australia has a strict customs screening process which NY International Shipping can assist you with to ensure a smooth entry. The Australian Customs Service handles immigration clearance for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) at all Australian entry points. Anyone who wishes to enter Australia must receive immigration clearance once they arrive. Your relocation specialist will ensure that you have all of the proper paperwork before your move date. Customs Duty and sales tax rates vary, though some items will not be subject to fees if they are carried by passengers or are household goods brought for your personal use. When you ship your pet to Australia you will be required to have certain health checks and inoculations done ahead of time, present certain paperwork upon arrival and quarantine your pet (contact a NY International Shipping relocation specialist for detailed information). We highly recommend checking with your local consulate regarding necessary documents as well as updated regulations, as well.

Australian Visa Process

If you are contemplating moving to Australia, make sure that you research or ask an international moving professional about the formalities and system set in place for acquiring an Australian visa. There are different types of visas, but the one most highly sought after by clients moving to Australia tends to be the Skilled Visa. The Skilled Visa is specifically for individuals who specialize in a particular skilled labor and fall into categories created by the Australian government which are in demand or are found in low numbers amongst the native Australian citizens. As Australia possesses a very stable economy with low inflation and unemployment rates, Australia is certainly a very desirable place to relocate overseas to. If you are a skilled professional, tradesperson or a student attending an Australian university, you (and your dependents) may qualify for skilled migration and unrestricted rights to work in Australia without sponsorship. In order to qualify, you or your partner must meet certain requirements for English language skills, age, work history experience, qualifications, etc. You will also be judged on a points system based on your skill, age, spouse’s skills, etc. Processing time for Skilled Visas when relocating to Australia can take anywhere from 6-12 months and fees can vary.
