Selected destinations are served by ocean going, roll on-roll off car ferry (RO-RO) services. These are purposely-built car carriers, used by manufacturers to deliver brand new vehicles the world over. The cars are protected from the elements and secured within enclosed car decks by straps and chocks to tie points. This service is less popular than container shipment, but can be more cost effective for certain routes.

A term for roll-on roll-off cargo, which is driven on and off the vessel. RO-RO cargo comprises cars, tractors, buses and trucks, or oversized cargo loaded on special flatbed, lowboy trailers.

Less physical handling ensures there is no need for costly dismantling and reassembly.

No exposure to water or the elements as the cargo is always secured in the RO-RO vessel’s enclosed garage deck for the entire voyage.

RO-RO vessels are capable of safely shipping automobiles, trucks, buses, bulldozers and other heavy vehicles. The damage prevention techniques inherent in this shipment method are rated as the most advanced in the industry.
